NOTE:We will not have a meeting in October due to the annual picnic and fund raiser on October 6th.The next scheduled meeting will be:

Thursday, November 8th

Cadence Bank, Blairsville, GA

The tying session starts at 5:00 pm and the business session starts at 7:00 pm.

November Program:We will hear a presentation on Stream Entomology (aka stream critters) by Wildlife Interpretive Specialist Sheila Humphrey.†† Sheila teaches at Smithgall Woods State Park and is a past recipient of the Outstanding Service Award given by the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia. It will be both informative and fun.

Annual Picnic and Fundraiser:This Saturday, October 6th, will be our annual picnic and fundraiser at the Hiwassee River Trout Lodge on Hwy. 75 south of the town of Hiawassee. We are looking forward to a fun-filled day of food, fly fishing and fund raising.Once again, Rib Country restaurant is catering the barbecue at a very reasonable price. The cost is $15/person and this yearís fee includes a $10 Dream Ticket for a 5-day fishing trip in Idaho near the west entrance to Yellowstone Park.Additional Dream Tickets will be available for purchase at the reduced price of $5 for all chapter members.†† You can arrive any time after 9:00 a.m. if you wish to fish in the Hiwassee River that runs beside the lodge.Lunch will be served around noon with the live auction to follow.

We have a full array of great auction items, both silent and live.†† The Rabun Chapter gave our chapter a beautifully-framed print of a brook trout that was painted by one of its members, Broderick Crawford.Broderickís work has recently been shown on the new Georgia Trout Unlimited license plate designs, as well.†† This print will be one of the live auction items.

Rabun Chapter President Pat Hopton presents Joe Duket with the print.

Volunteers Needed:At the last meeting, Marcus resigned his position as our community events coordinator after several years of dedicated work for the chapter. We thank him for the countless hours he spent over the years helping us pull together the events we do at the hatchery (Special Kids Day, Seniors Day, Family Day and Veterans Appreciation Day).†† Marcus was also responsible for opening and closing the meeting room at Cadence Bank, a job that entails a good deal of responsibility.

We are asking all our chapter members to step up and volunteer to fill the void.As new President of the chapter, I am looking for volunteers among our 127 chapter members to help us continue our vital service to the hatchery.††

Rods and Reels for the Hatchery:The chapter will be assisting the hatchery by contributing $250 for the purchase of 30 new rods and reels. This equipment will replace those that have been used and abused over the past few years during their various community events.

Project Healing Waters:Our chapter will be hosting the monthly event at the Blairsville VA Clinic on Thursday morning, October 11th, from 9:00 until 12:00.Several of our chapter members including Pat Bradley, Steve Banakas, Bob Kern and others have assisted the other lead chapters at the August and September events. We make the veterans aware of Project Healing Waters and the many benefits of fly fishing and fly tying.During the three hours each month, we show the vets how to tie flies and even conduct casting sessions on the front lawn, weather permitting.Itís a great way to help our vets, especially those who are disabled physically and/or mentally due to their service.

Work Projects:We will be receiving from the GA Council of TU a list of work projects on the board for 2013.If our chapter wishes to participate in any of the projects, we will be discussing it during the November meeting so that our participation can be included at the December meeting of the GA Council.

Suggestions Needed:We are looking for suggestions from our members for programs at our monthly meetings in 2013.If you have suggestions, please send them to Joe Duket at downstreamcaster@gmail.com.

Tight lines,

Joe Duket
